|My name is Jaynee Ray Gibson. I have found myself in prison and in one of the hardest situations in life. Before my incarceration, I never had a plan to who I wanted to be…
Today, I have a good idea of who I am and what’s to come from my struggles and incarceration. I have a passion to use my situation to help keep others from making the same mistakes I did. I am self-studying communication and public speaking and will one day use my story, my imprisonment, my survival to help others become aware of the risks.
I am determined and motivated to one day council others. I am positive, energetic, confident and always wearing a smile. I surround myself with studies to keep my mind growing and laughter to keep my heart from aching. I enjoy poetry and would love to share one of mine with you.
--This body of mine--
This body of mine is controlled, locked in a prison with other mind, body and souls.
A regulation to every move, confined within this body of mine – I refuse.
This body of mine is held in captivity, though this mind of mine is free.
Finding everyday tasks that humanize, to remind myself I am not as they see.
Convict, guilty, inmate, shame…this body of mine is amongst the same.
Beautiful, kind, a person of joy, this mind of mind holds poise.
Living in the darkest place, I take a step forward every day. For one day gone is another day home, my mind is there and one day this body of mine…prison will no longer own.
I refuse to become institutionalized.
